Thirteen Essentials for the Well Prepared Individual. The Franklin Kit contains thirteen items that will come in handy when you’re in a pickle. The idea of the Franklin Kit came from a small pouch that my wife put together with a few things that would come in handy for her on the go. A mother of small children, she wanted items that could handle small medical incidences (think bandages and aquaphor), as well as everyday needs (think tweezers and anti-septic wipes). Not a first aid kit, the pouch was really an all-purpose kit. This is the aim of the Franklin Kit, to provide some essential, everyday items while on the go. To boot, every one of the thirteen items are made in the U.S.A.
The Franklin Kit would not be complete without a beautiful, well made case. Made specially for Leather Built by Gfeller Casemakers in Meridian, Idaho, our thirteen necessities come with a sturdy, molded, full grain saddle skirting leather case with a button snap. Rugged enough to withstand years of abuse, but beautiful enough to toss in a purse or briefcase, the case is the perfect complement for the thirteen essentials.

A Little History
Benjamin Franklin was a founding father, author, printer, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, polymath, entrepreneur, and political theorist. One wonders if there was anything that Franklin did not do. Born in Boston and raised with his nine siblings, Franklin was mostly self educated through his voracious reading. Becoming an apprentice to his brother at the age of 12, Franklin learned the printing industry. His brother proved to be difficult to work with and Franklin fled to Philadelphia at the age of 17, effectively becoming a fugitive. Obsessed with self-improvement throughout his life, Franklin came up with a list of thirteen virtues at the age of 20, virtues that he wanted to improve upon, and which he worked on in some form or another throughout his life. Those thirteen virtues were: temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility. Franklin felt that though he often fell short of these virtues, the effort to improve them made him a better person and led to much of the success he had in life. In fact, his autobiography spends more time on the thirteen virtues than on any other single point. Like Franklin’s thirteen virtues, our thirteen essentials in the Franklin Kit will help you to be better prepared for life’s daily occurrences.
Gfellers - A Quality Tradition
Gfeller Casemakers is based in a small shop in the heart of Meridian, Idaho. Dedicated to using the finest materials with the highest quality craftsmanship, Gfeller has been making fine goods for almost 70 years. Originally founded by Roy Gfeller in 1946 to help outfit the geoscience community with durable carrying cases for instruments and tools, Gfeller has expanded its product offering to a wider range of goods and services. Today, about ⅓ of their production is still focused on geoscience gear, ⅓ on notebook covers and other writing gear, and ⅓ on custom projects and orders.
In 1985, with Roy’s passing, Gfeller Casemakers became available for purchase. As an avid user of Gfellers products, and an active geologist, Steve Derricott inquired into the business, and after some hands on work at the shop in Colorado, Steve purchase Gfeller and moved it to the Boise, Idaho area and later settled in Meridian.
A visit to Steve’s shop reveals a number of sewing machines, burnishing wheels, rivet setters, hydraulic clicking machine, and a number of other tools and machines, new and not so new that aid Steve and his team in creating fine, durable goods.
In acquiring the business in 1985, Steve made a decision at that moment that he would carry on Roy’s commitment to the highest quality, most durable goods possible. A wall at Gfellers is devoted to original bags and satchels that could still be taken out and used to effect today. The main component in quality leather gear is the leather itself. To this day, Steve still purchases leather from the Hermann Oak Leather Company in St. Louis, Missouri, which was founded in 1881. Hermann Oak produces some of the finest vegetable tanned leather available in the United States, if not the world. Adhering to time tested and original recipes, Hermann Oak leather is tanned in a way and with high quality ingredients that ensures that the leather will stand the test of time.
Exclusively using Hermann Oak Leather and building with the best hardware and thread, any piece that comes out of the Gfeller shop will last a lifetime. Though the thirteen essentials will need to be replenished time and again, the Benjamin case will be an item that you can pass on to your children, so like you, they will be a well prepared individual.
