The Slingin Sammy Baugh Football is not your run of the mill football.  Carefully crafted by hand, one at a time, from individually selected hides from Tasman, the Slingin Sammy is a beautiful rendition of a classic football.  Each ball is unique and designed to be a collectors item, but built to withstand the rigors of outdoor use and abuse.  The ball is sewn with a beautiful red polyester thread, which will ensure years of tough play.  The grip is laced with thick rawhide, aiding in that perfect spiral.

A Little History

Samuel Adrien “Slingin Sammy” Baugh, was a star football player for the Washington Redskins from 1937 to 1952.  A quarterback, punter, and defensive back, his talents were not limited to football.  He also played baseball for the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University, where he earned his nickname Slingin Sammy.  Baugh was the fire that ignited Washington Redskin fanaticism due to his dynamic play and his forward pass, an abnormal play in his era due to the football being rounder in the middle and fatter on the ends.  Baugh set 13 NFL records by the time he retired and was considered one of the greatest all around football players ever.

A Zany Company

What do you get when you cross a former photo editor for Major League Baseball and an avid leather craftsman?  You get a fun and zany company that crafts some of the finest sports balls and goods in America.

Paul Cunningham, the proprietor of Leather Head Sports, is a native son of Cooperstown, New York (home of The Hall of Fame of Major League Baseball), so it is no surprise that he has a passion for baseball and sports in general.  A long time sports industry professional, Paul has had the opportunity of working with the greatest baseball photographers in the world.  All of this sports experience and passion for the game has lead Paul to a passion of creating some special and unique leather goods.

Paul’s first run at creating his fine leather goods came when he founded Cunningham Classics, where he developed the Lemon Ball and Leather Head footballs.  With a focus on old world craftsmanship and high attention to detail, Paul was fulfilling his dream and what he felt was his calling.  Leather Head’s products are not your run of the mill footballs, baseballs, and other leather goods.  Their products are not even your run of the mill upper end goods.  Leather Head uses the finest leathers and materials available, and produce the best goods possible in their own shop in Glen Rock, New Jersey, using time tested practices and craftsmanship.  The result are products so fantastic that they are beautiful enough to encase in a display, but functional enough to play with every day.  These are goods that are durable enough that your kids will be teaching their kids with the same balls.

When we asked Leather Head what’s makes their goods or processes unique, they replied:

All products are made by hand by skilled craftspeople....and we sprinkle magic dust on all of our balls during the production process. AND we keep a fully stocked bar, which sadly never gets used because we are too busy, but just knowing it’s there is enough.  When we can, we like to test the spirals on the footballs. Of course, that's not an official process, the "testers" just like to have a little play time.  We are a small tight knit group that loves to go to work everyday.

Zany?  Yes, but Leather Head is one of those rare companies that really love bringing the best products to those who really appreciate high quality, and have a blast doing it.

Leather Built is a collection of the highest quality leather goods, all 100% made in the USA. We have searched the country for the very best shops and craftsmen and bring you samples of their finest work here. All our products are backed by a 50 year guarantee.
